Homesteads were located on nearly every square mile of the county during the 1920s and 30s. A few farmers tried to irrigate row crops, nearly every home had a garden and many people tried to make trees grow. By 1940 conditions were so dry that some farmers sold their homesteads to neighbors or newcomers or abandoned their sites altogether.
Sheep and cattle are still the economic backbone of agriculture in this grazing prairie land. R. B. Marquiss reintroduced bison to the area in 1922. Other herds followed in the 1960s.
The tools of many trades of bygone eras are on display.
"The more things change, the more they stay the same." This often quoted saying is certainly true when it comes to keeping house. The Hoosier cabinet in the homestead kitchen and the laundry artifacts attest that there are only small changes.
This saw was operated by pedaling before electricity was available.
Some equipment that was formerly use for work is now used as entertainment, such as these saddles.
